Summer School Day 3 - Finding inspiration in our city

02/08/2017

We explored the summer pavillion at the Serpentine designed this year by Francis Kéré from Gando, Burkino Faso.  We kept up our drawing and recording and paid particular attention to how Kéré used materials in the structure - layers of stained wood stacked and puzzeled together around a metal frame. For a good two hours we sat and absorbed the clever simplicity of the structure making collages and sketches. The shadows and light was really BEAUTIFUL!

Thinking about how different areas connect and make up the whole city we drew maps of our routes. Theses were slightly unconventional and perhaps wouldnt help you to navigate if you got lost! They did open up discussion for us about how we feel as we move through different environments and spaces. We felt very different squashed into the tube compared to the open green grass in the park. A very obvious and maybe simple reflection perhaps but something we all considered VERY important when thinking about our breif...we really did feel a different sense of welbeing in different parts of our journey and wanted to try and capture this in our final designs.
